8 July 2021
Partner OWI organized and participated in the “Umweltfreundliche Kraftstoffe für die Schifffahrt – biogene Beimischungskomponenten” (“Sustainable fuels for the Shipping Industry”), which was an online webinar and took place on the 8th of July, 2021.
The webinar has been organized as the shipping industry is facing the challenging task of achieving the climate protection targets it has set itself. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions by at least 50% by 2050 (compared to 2008), the sulphur content of bunker fuels must also be significantly reduced. Since ships usually have a service life of 30 years or more, it would be advantageous to develop fuels for the existing fleet that are very similar to the heavy fuel oils used to date in terms of their physical-chemical properties and that are also low in sulphur and CO2-neutral. Bio-based fuels can be an option.
In the webinar, the requirements for climate-neutral shipping as well as two projects (PyroMar and IDEALFUEL) that are developing biogenic fuel components to achieve these goals were presented. For IDEALFUEL, Dr. Wilfried Plum, Dr.-Ing. Sangeetha Ramaswamy and Mrs Nina Mebus of OWI participated.
Aside from the two projects, other attending institutions were: Verband Schiffsbau und Meerestechnik, Institut für Wärme und Mobilität, tkMS, Eindhoven University of Technology, ERC Additive, Tec4Fuels, Technische Universität Hamburg, Varo Energy, GMA Gesellschaft für Mineralöl-Analytik und Qualitätsmanagement mbH + Co. KG. During the webinar, about 25 people attended in total.
